Yes, red light therapy (photobiomodulation) has reasonably solid evidence behind it for sports recovery — arguably stronger and more consistent than infrared sauna in some specific outcome measures, though it depends heavily on dose, wavelength, and timing.
Where the evidence is fairly strong:
Muscle soreness (DOMS) reduction: Numerous studies, including several meta-analyses, show red/near-infrared light applied before or after exercise reduces delayed-onset muscle soreness.
Muscle fatigue and performance: There's decent evidence that pre-exercise red light exposure can delay fatigue onset and modestly improve performance in subsequent bouts — this is one of the more studied applications.
Markers of muscle damage: Some studies show reduced creatine kinase (a blood marker of muscle damage) after red light treatment compared to placebo, which is a more objective signal than perceived soreness alone.
Mechanism plausibility: Red/near-infrared light (typically 600–1000nm) is thought to stimulate mitochondrial activity (via cytochrome c oxidase), which has a reasonably well-established cellular basis, unlike some wellness modalities with no clear mechanism at all.
Where it's weaker or inconsistent:
Dosing variability: Studies use wildly different wavelengths, power densities, and treatment durations, making it hard to generalize "red light therapy" as one intervention — a $2,000 panel and a $10,000 panel may deliver very different effective doses.
Timing matters a lot: Pre-exercise application has more consistent supportive evidence than post-exercise application for some outcomes.
Long-term/chronic use data: Less research exists on cumulative effects from regular use over months, which is more relevant to a studio's recurring membership model.
Placebo control challenges: Because the treatment is a warm light with no dramatic sensation, blinding is genuinely difficult, and some effect sizes may be inflated by expectation.
Practical takeaway: Red light therapy has a more defensible mechanistic and clinical evidence base than many recovery modalities on the market, particularly for soreness reduction and pre-exercise performance priming. It's still not going to replace sleep, hydration, and progressive training load management as the foundation of recovery — but among "passive" recovery tools, it's one of the better-supported options.
